A couple of months ago I wrote a blog which included the feeling some of us as leaders have of ‘God, if I feel like this and it’s still September, how am I going to feel in the darkness of November?!’
And here we are. Autumn has definitely sprung (having moved back to my native Wales I really had forgotten how much it rains here!) Unlike September though, we all know November is tough. It really is part of the school story in this country. Staff absence levels can be almost laughable. And we all know pupil absence doesn’t match it. In the UK we’re really starting to experience leaving the house in the dark and maybe even leaving school in the dark. People are worn out and worn down. Our October half term has barely broken the stride of such a long term. And of course, in the UK half term signifies one of the resignation dates of teachers. So leaders can be working out what to do in January when a teacher has left and there’s no time to appoint an immediate replacement. These things weigh heavy.
