My baby brother Adam* lives in Costa Rica. I have been lucky enough to visit him over there and experience a whole other culture and way of living.
It was fascinating to learn about an education system with a completely different focus to ones I had experienced before (see my research in Finland and the Dominican Republic).
During my visit at The Hive in the Dominican Republic, I got to work with a huge range of pupils, much wider a variety of pupils in one space than my usual environments. This is because anyone can attend The Hive.

…and today I was the wrong person to deal with behaviour that was challenging from a pupil.
Ouch! For the Ego!
I have to say, I have checked in on this question a couple of times…
…and the answer is getting stronger each time.
“Adele, it’s making a difference, what you’re teaching us, it’s helping with the pupils’ behaviour.”
That moment;

The schools are a hangover from the Communist time, which ended in Bulgaria only 30 years ago. Since then, many schools in small villages and towns across the country have been left, due to a reducing population. Bulgaria is the poorest country in Europe and that, along with the corruption, means that unfortunately it’s not just schools that have been left.
How do we include all of our pupils – the ones from minority groups, the ones with disadvantages to learning even before they step into your classroom? This interview meanders through many topics ultimately bringing us back to how we ensure our education system is inclusive for all of our pupils.
