“Adele, you’re doing too much pastoral”
This was the sentence that took me from teaching full time into the beginning of my now 7 year journey of running my own organisation as a Behaviour & Education Specialist.
Over my 20+ years of teaching, I had increasingly found myself put with the ‘naughty kids’ – and couldn’t have been happier about it. I became the Lead on Equality,Diversity and Inclusion in my last full time, mainstream post, and spent increasing amounts of my lunchtimes, before school and after school slots supporting pupils’ wellbeing, mental health and therefore behaviour.
The pivotal point came one meeting with my Head, having noticed how much time and dedication I was giving to the more vulnerable pupils, he informed me:
“Adele, you’re doing too much pastoral”
It made my blood boil.
