A recent conversation I had with a Secondary School student:
Me: How are your English lessons going in school at the moment?
Pupil: Oh, we’re not having real English lessons, haven’t for weeks.
Me: Oh dear, why’s that?
Pupil: Because of Brexit.
Me: (flabbergasted) BREXIT?! Umm….why is Brexit stopping you have normal English lessons?!
Pupil: Because all the teachers have to get ready for the inspectors, so we’re just doing preparation things, and making our books look nice.
Me: How long has this been going on?
Pupil: The last two weeks.
I have read in too many places how Ofsted inspections negatively affects lessons and pupils’ learning. Yet more sad evidence.
